A fascinating and highly recommended ground-covering plant, once rare but now widely popular in aquascaping, is Micranthemum tweediei, also known as “Montecarlo” or “Monte Carlo.” This plant, initially discovered by Japanese and South American aquarists around 2010, hails from wet areas like streambanks in Argentina, Uruguay, and South Brazil. Its appearance resembles a larger version of Hemianthus callitrichoides, with roundish to elliptic leaves slightly smaller and darker green. Compared to Hemianthus callitrichoides, Micranthemum tweediei is much easier to cultivate.
This plant thrives in subtropical regions, suggesting it may tolerate temperatures below 20°C, although further testing is needed. When planting, it’s best to divide it into single shoots or small clusters, spaced apart to allow for proper growth. These shoots spread across the ground, sometimes burying themselves in the substrate, eventually forming a dense mat several centimeters thick. Regular trimming is necessary to prevent detachment from the ground, especially if planted in elevated areas where loose shoots may droop downwards.
Micranthemum tweediei, originating from southern South America, is a versatile ground cover that isn’t overly demanding in terms of light. It can even be placed on hardscapes where it grows elegantly cascading down. Moreover, it’s suitable for emersed growth in paludariums and Wabi-Kusa setups, adding to its appeal and versatility.
