Black King Kong shrimp, also known as BKK, are predominantly black with one or two white stripes on their back.
These shrimp belong to the Taiwan Bee shrimp variety and are a mutation of crystal red, crystal black, and golden bee shrimp. Like all Caridina shrimp, Black King Kongs thrive in clean, soft, acidic water with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.8 and a general hardness (gH) of 4 to 6. They prefer temperatures between 68 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
In the aquarium, it’s essential to have a fully cycled tank with ample biofilms and plants for the shrimp to graze on. Ammonia and nitrite levels should always be kept at zero, with nitrate levels under 25 ppm. Regular water changes of 10-20% per week are recommended to maintain low nitrate levels. Overfeeding should be avoided, with feeding limited to 2-3 times a week to prevent shrimp deaths.
Breeding Black King Kong shrimp follows a similar process to breeding crystal red shrimp. Female shrimp carry the eggs for approximately 30 days until they hatch into miniature versions of their parents. A well-established aquarium is crucial for the survival of the shrimplets, as they can only consume biofilms until they mature.
